Meet the artist: Spencer Aubrey brings connection through art in Winston-Salem

This local artist moved from Arizona in 2019 and made the Twin City his new home where he helps bridge the gap between artists in the community.

Headphone tilted in one ear, fingers glancing over the mixer, body grooving to the beat — this is a familiar state of being for Spencer Aubrey. Also known as P.S. Edekot, the local DJ is making his mark in the Twin City through his artistic talents.

Aubrey came to Winston-Salem in 2019 to visit his sister with plans to stay for a month, but it turns out, life had a plan of its own.

“I was going to go back to Arizona, and then I ended up getting a job at Camino Bakery the second week that I was here, and then basically I was working probably close to 40 hours a week, and it just made sense for me to stay here in Winston,” Aubrey said.

For Aubrey, innovation was the name of the game, much like a Winstonian mindset.

“When I started working here, things just started moving forward. I started getting some DJ’ing gigs,” he said. “I was teaching some line dance classes intermittently. There were a lot of things that unfolded from a vocational perspective that kept popping up and giving me more and more reason to invest more deeply here.”

Aubrey’s impact is felt beyond his creative booth — he often shares the art of Dj’ing with younger generations, giving them an inside look into the world through hands-on experiences.

Aubrey is a co-owner of The CMPND, a space for creative artists to actualize their vision while working on their craft. The organization partners with HUSTLE WS to equip artists with the tools to step into entrepreneurship. Aubrey has made Winston-Salem his new home.

“I didn’t grow up here, but I’ve grown up here. In all the ways I’ve learned to love forward in life, a space where the growth can happen in an authentic way.” Aubrey said. “I’ve had a lot of hard things happen here, a lot of amazing things happen here. And at the same time, I’m still connected to this community.”

You can find P.S. Edekot DJ’ing at events like Evening in the Atrium, ART Crush, or venues like Dram and Draughts on Mondays. Aubrey also performs poetry at The Bookhouse during Open Mic Nights.
